Snowman Money Ball Gift Idea

This "Snowman Money Ball" was SUPER popular last Christmas with my adult children!  I basically combined two ideas that I had seen on Pinterest:  the Saran Wrap Game mixed with a Crepe Paper Money Snowball.  As per usual, my kids mainly hoped for money from us, but this is what I did to make it more fun!

Note:  Don't think this will only work for Christmas!  The concept works especially well in the winter, but the idea could be modified to create a baseball/volleyball in the summer, etc.

HOW TO MAKE A SNOWMAN MONEY BALL

In my case, this wasn't a game, it was an actual gift.  This means that I made three snowman heads with the same amount of money in each one.  So first off, determine how much money you want to gift.  I tend to use smaller bills, so there is more actual cash inside.

I ended up using Glad Cling Wrap and it worked well.  I used less than two boxes to make my three Snowman heads.  To keep it simple with my Glad Wrap, I basically pulled out and cut a 12 to 18 inch piece each time (i.e., no super long pieces that were wrapped and wrapped).

Snowman Money Ball Gift Idea

To begin, I wrapped the first bill around a pencil to make a tube and then I wrapped that in a piece of plastic.  I did this again, and then I wrapped the two individually wrapped bills together with another piece of plastic wrap.  Keep wrapping pieces of plastic wrap, one going this way and next one going that way trying to build an actual circle shape.  Now you are ready to add another bill.  From here on out, just keep the bills flat and cover them with the plastic wrap.  (The plastic wrap doesn't stick to the money, but it will stick to itself.)  Keep squeezing and shaping your money ball into a circle, wrapping in different directions just like if you are making a yarn ball.  Continue this process until you like the size of your money ball or you run out of money.  I ended up making mine about the size of a human head.

*********************************************

The next step is to wrap your money ball in white crepe paper.  You can buy inexpensive crepe paper at Dollar Tree/Party City, etc.  I also cut the crepe paper into pieces and wrapped this part in sections.  I used Zots (double-stick adhesive dots) to attach the strips (available at Michaels, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby).

Snowman Money Ball Gift Idea

I cut a strip of crepe paper about two feet long.  Using a Zot, attach one end to the money ball and start wrapping to cover the plastic (again, you will be wrapping this way and that way).  Try to keep the crepe paper as flat as you can as you are wrapping.  Use another Zot to end this strip.  Cut another strip, starting in a different direction, attach another Zot and continue wrapping.  Repeat this process until the plastic wrap is completely covered.

*********************************************

To make the snowman face, I punched circles from black scrapbook paper and cut a triangular shaped nose from orange paper.  I also attached all of these pieces with Zots.  Ta-da...so cute!

HOW I GIFTED THE SNOWMAN MONEY BALL

For many years, I have wanted a "Santa" sack for my kids.  I know, I know, my kids are all grown up, but I didn't have Pinterest and Etsy and all of the fun Internet stuff when they were little.  I considered trying to make one myself, BUT THEN there was a Black Friday sale for a sack that I liked.  I ordered three and they were all perfect/beautiful!  The names are stitched on.  These were far better than I could have made myself (and probably ended up being cheaper too)!

Santa Sack for Snowman Money Ball Gift Idea

I will warn you that this shop stopped taking orders for the Santa sacks shortly after Black Friday, so plan ahead.  She is taking orders again now.  Note:  Wouldn't a Santa Sack make a great baby shower gift?!?  I plan to use these every year, so I didn't let the kids take them home with them; however they really liked them and kind of wanted to.  The takeaway is that these types of bags aren't only for younger children.

We are a family of soft-blanket lovers, so I purchased an "oversized luxe throw" for each Santa Sack.  I gently wrapped the snowman head in the blanket and then stuffed the blanket in the sacks to make them look more full.  This was the very last gift.  My husband lugged them in on his back while ho-ho-ho-ing, which the kids also thought was funny.  They exclaimed over the sacks, were excited about a new snuggly blanket and had a BALL unwrapping their money from the snowman head.

This gift was definitely a winner!

Out of the Blue Gift Idea

Can you think of someone who deserves an extra gift this holiday season?  If you are in a position to help, it might make someone's day a little brighter to receive a gift with this free printable "A gift for you from out of the blue" tag attached.

Free Printable Out of the Blue Gift Tag

Due to the pandemic, we are hearing that the Food Pantries are facing unprecedented demands this year.  One idea would be to staple this tag onto a bag of groceries and leave them anonymously on someone's doorstep.

It is always fun to receive mail, too.  My kids know about my love for Gnomes and my oldest (and his girlfriend) gave me some cute notecards for my birthday this year.

Gnome Notecard

For my "out of the blue" surprise, I printed an eGift card, attached the tag, and mailed it to my kids letting them "Gnome" how much we love them.

Here is something else to think about...I watched "A Holly Dolly Christmas" this year.  Dolly Parton told a story about going to church on Christmas Eve where all the adults and children typically received a little grab bag at the end of the service.  One year, after they'd handed out the small presents to everyone, there wasn't a bag left for her mother.

One of the church ladies said, "Well, you won't mind, will you?  You've got so many kids and they all got one anyway."  Her mama said, "That's OK, I understand..."

But everybody's a kid at Christmas and Dolly saw her mama sitting on a bench silently crying afterward.  When she tried to give her mama the bag she had received, her mother told Dolly she had a good heart, but she couldn't take her bag.

I think Dolly is right to remind us that everyone feels like a kid at Christmas.  No matter how old you are, everyone wants to feel special...

EASY TEN DAYS OF GIFTING HOW-TO

I am excited to finally share the concept for the "Ten Days of Gifting"!

It is fun, easy, AND customizable!!!

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

Because 2020 has been such a weird year and because I have adult children who mainly want money for Christmas (I get it, but boring), I wanted to do something different/extra this year.  I considered using some Pinterest version of the Twelve Days of Christmas, but I don't like the song, the potential gift ideas were too limiting (and weird?), and I'm picky about rhyme schemes having just the right "flow".  I thought about writing my own "Twelve Days", but I didn't want the added stress of that (and somehow twelve gifts seemed excessive, but ten feels just right)!  Goldilocks syndrome?!?

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

Anyway, I plowed ahead and merrily started creating free printable gift tags for things I thought my family would like or might be amused by.  My subconscious continued to think about how I could "gift" these items in an EASY and FUN way. And then...

Lightbulb moment!

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

Why not put the gift with the cute tag inside a simple numbered bag and write ONE introductory rhyme that explains the whole thing?!?

Did you notice that the explanation tags reference the Polar Express?  I made these little printable tickets years ago and I love them so much that I set them out every year!

Wrapped 10 Days of Gifting Package

Punch a hole and tie on a ribbon and a little silver (or red) bell.  Silver is "more correct" per the story, but my people won't know that.  If you have a circle punch, turn it upside down and line up the 1/4 circle edge with the line on the tag for a clean line.  If you don't have a punch, use a sharp scissor to trim the fancy edge.  You can either add the ticket favor as an "extra" in gift bag #1 or attach it to the top of the wrapped package along with the explanation (like I did).

To Wrap:

(As shown in the first photo) I placed the gift bags in a large box and lined the packages up in two rows (1-5 and 6-10).  I taped the box closed and carefully wrapped the top and sides without flipping the box over.  You will need to keep track of "which side is up".

Gift How-To:
For the gifts, I purchased these simple white lunch bags and I like them a lot!

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

They are larger than normal lunch bags and all of my gifts fit inside.  The only downside is that they are a tiny bit see through, so I did wrap everything in white tissue paper to keep everyone from trying to guess what the next gift would be.  I will absolutely purchase these bags again!  I am going to try my hand at making luminaries with the leftovers.  Plus, I can "style" them for any upcoming holiday or birthday gifting opportunity.

The best part of this idea???  You can copy my gifts OR you can customize what you choose to give inside each bag.  The rhyme/bags/numbers will work for anything you put inside (with or without a fun gift tag attached).  Look on Pinterest for other gift ideas if any of mine don't work for you.

If you want to copy me exactly, I basically alternated food/drink gifts with non-edible presents.  I've linked to the posts with the free tags below.

Note:  If they have a beloved pet, you might want to use these optional tags to gift them a new cat toy or dog treats.

Here are the numbered tags for the outside of the bags.  You know me, just in case you are a "Twelve Days" person, I've got you covered!  But I personally will only be using numbers 1-10 for my Ten Days of Gifting.  I didn't fool around with ribbon, I simply folded the bag over and used two staples to attach each tag.

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

I have to admit that I avoided watching The Polar Express for years.  When I finally watched it, I really did like it (so I laughed at myself for being so stubborn).

Josh Groban's "Believe" is now one of my favorite Christmas songs.

Here is a basic plot summary if you don't remember the movie:
One Christmas Eve many years ago, a boy lies in bed, listening hard for the bells of Santa’s sleigh, which he has been told by a friend do not exist. Later that night he hears not bells but a very different sound. He looks out of his window and is astounded to see a steam engine parked in front of his house. The conductor invites him to board the Polar Express, a train filled with children on their way to the North Pole. The boy and his companions journey past tiny towns and forests full of wild creatures. They travel up and around mountains and across the Great Polar Ice Cap to the magical city at the North Pole. The train takes the children to the center of the city, where Santa and the elves have gathered for the giving of the first gift of Christmas. The boy is chosen to receive this first gift. Knowing that he can choose anything in the world, he decides on a simple gift: one silver bell from Santa’s sleigh. Santa cuts a bell from a reindeer’s harness and the delighted boy slips it into his bathrobe pocket as the clock strikes midnight and the reindeer pull the sleigh into the sky.

When the children return to the train, the boy realizes the bell has fallen through a hole in his pocket. Heartbroken, he is returned to his home. In the morning, his little sister finds one small box with the boy’s name on it among the presents below the Christmas tree. Inside is the silver bell! The boy and his sister are enchanted by its beautiful sound, but their parents cannot hear it. The boy continues to believe in the spirit of Christmas and is able to hear the sweet ringing of the bell even as an adult.  (Courtesy of houghtonmifflinbooks.com)

I made one more tag that will be an extra present in the #10 gift bag.  This tag will be wrapped with the signs that my sweet friend, Cindy, made for me. I love that my family will be able to set the signs out each year and be reminded that the word "Believe" can have two different meanings at Christmastime (Santa and Jesus).

Easy Ten Days of Gifting (How-to with gift ideas)

I'd like my family to always remember the wonder of Christmas (and never be too old to hear the bell ring or search the skies on Christmas Eve)!

I can think of all sorts of people who you could gift this to: family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers, but please also consider your older friends/family in nursing homes, too.  2020 has been an especially lonely year for them.  ๐Ÿ˜ข   You will have to check on local rules, but wouldn't it be fun to drop off a big wrapped box with ten little gifts inside?  That way your loved one could look forward to opening one gift each day leading up to Christmas.

I would love it if you would share this idea.  If you do try it this year, please let me know and list your alternate gift ideas in the comment section!

I do "believe" that the Ten Days of Gifting may become a new tradition for my family!  The numbered tags and gift bags would be the same from year to year, but the actual presents inside would be different.

I love, love, love this easy idea (and I hope you do, too)!

Merry Christmas!

I am not a very good cook/baker, but that doesn't mean I'm not related to one!  My niece was a contestant on a local baking competition last year.

Kids Baking Battle Logo

She didn't win, but what a great experience for her!  This all happened in 2019, and what a difference a year makes.  It seems so weird to have people unmasked and happily standing near each other!

Here is a picture of her pie entry.  The whole family was very proud of her!

In honor of S-girl (that is what my sister calls her on her blog, Shut The Fridge), I've made some cute tags for you to tie onto your baked (or to be baked) goods!  The tags are for personal use only.

There are two slightly different edge color options.  I keep flipping back and forth between which one I like best, so I'll just share both and you can choose!  (Print your tags on cardstock.)

Last weekend I got sucked into watching one of those baking competitions on The Food Network.  It is amazing to me how they seem to know every recipe by heart!  Even though I don't like baking, I sure do like watching other people doing it...

I hope you can use these tags to bake someone's spirits bright!

Jingle BILLS or Silver BILLS Gift Idea

My kids are now in their twenties and CASH remains king as far as presents go.  Just handing them money is boring, so I always try to find unique ways to gift it to them.  I originally saw this idea here, but there wasn't a printable, so I made one of each to share with you!

Jingle Bills

I found these jingle bells at our local Dollar Tree in the Christmas Ornament section.  They were pre-decorated - bonus!

Use a paper trimmer to cut out your tags.  Try to leave an even border on all sides.  I used a ruler to measure to the approximate center and then dropped my mark slightly (because of the leaves on my bells).  My first try was too high and you couldn't read the words, so this will depend on what your actual bells look like.  My hole punch would not reach, so I used an X-acto knife to cut a little X over my center mark.  Push through with the end of a pen to make the hole bigger if necessary.

Jingle Bills Gift Idea

I threaded the hanger through the hole and taped it to the back.

Fold your money in half, in half, in half, in half and push it up into the bell opening.  I did have to bend the bell edges apart a bit to make the money fit.  (Use the end of a scissor or a screwdriver.)

Here is the final product - Jingle Bills:

I plan to put the entire thing in a little box, wrap it up and put it under the tree!

The next day I made a partner for my gnome...I did think about giving them a "gnose" job, but they make me laugh so I'm leaving them alone.

I think gnomes make terrific gifts, either store-bought or homemade.  If you are in the market to purchase one, Etsy sells some beautiful gnomes!

Update:  September 2020 - I have had my eye on this gnome for almost a year and I finally ordered him!  Sometimes you just have to "gift" yourself, especially during 2020.  "Sven" makes me smile.

#5 - Be Merry Gnome (updated November 2020)

The free printable gnome gift tags have been my most popular pin this year!  I was going to show you how to do a reverse image mod-podge ornament on a wood slice using this next image; however it was very sensitive when I started rubbing off the paper.  I decided to forget it for this year and reversed the words back to normal.  So here is a circle tag for you.  (Note:  If you don't have a circle cutter, simply find a glass that is slightly larger than the circle and trace/cut.  It is OK if a few of the larger leaves are cut off!)

I hope your loved ones will all be GNOME for the holidays!
