Milestone Party Idea: "When Grandpa Was My Age"

My old computer (going on eight years!) is getting ready to give up the ghost.  In anticipation of this event, I have been perusing my folders to see what I want to keep.  There is a virtual treasure trove of jokes, puppet shows, plays, blog ideas and my children's previous homework assignments on this old beast.  Reliving the past through my computer folders has been interesting to say the least!  Anyway, I found an idea that I would like to share with you today for a "milestone" birthday party...

Milestone Party: When Grandpa Was My Age

The idea is to have readers of various ages telling what the world was like for the honoree when they were the same age.  We did this for my dad's 75th birthday (which was just a couple of years before his unexpected death, so we were happy that we also had a semi-recent group photo).  If you find yourself in charge of planning a milestone party for an older friend or relative, I encourage you to give this a try!  It does take some custom preparation, but I will list some websites at the end of this post to help with your research.

We used the grandchildren as our "visuals", however you could also recruit older people at various ages (as long as they aren't shy about telling everyone how old they really are).  In our case, we lined the kids up from youngest to oldest.  If the kids could read, they read their part.  If not, a parent "helped", while the child in question smiled at Grandpa (in a perfect world).  Simply calculate how old "Grandpa" was when he was the same age as your "reader" and list three fun facts about the world at that time in history.

Here is our entire script so you can see exactly what we did!
