The "Bookie Monster" Bookmark How-To...

Well, both of my kids will be in high school this year...so I'm sharing some of the ideas that I didn't get to use with my own kids (but I still think they're cute!).

I have one child that loves to read (like Mom) and one that doesn't (like Dad in his early years).  I struggled with ways to get my non-reader to enjoy it more.  Looking back at the little boy that he was, I think he might have enjoyed these bookmarks!

This craft is easiest if you use scrapbook paper with a different design on both sides (take your child shopping with you...to a place like Archivers or Michael's).

Using a straight edge, draw a 2.5 x 2.5 inch square in one of the corners of the paper.  Connect another 2.5 x 2.5 inch square to each edge of the original square...

Again, using a straight edge, bisect the outside squares as shown (I scribbled out the part that you won't use).

Cut along the outside edges:

If you are making teeth, use a white strip of cardstock approximately 3.5" x 1".  Cut out the teeth as shown:

Score the remaining pencil lines from your original cut-out. Carefully fold one triangle over to cover half of the remaining square.  Using a glue stick, apply glue to the entire top side of the triangle.  Attach the teeth and then fold down the remaining triangle to close the teeth between the layers.

You will be left with a pocket that can be slipped over the edge of a book page.  Use a circle punch to create eyes (or use stick-on googly eyes).  Flip the paper over and make another one that looks a little bit different!

Kung Fu Panda Party Ideas, Wrap-up!

To end our Panda-themed party...
little brother gave birthday boy a Pillow Pet (and he liked it)!

Kung Fu Panda Party

In case you missed them:

You could also use these ideas for a family movie night!  To make the night even more fun, you could:
  • Order Chinese food
  • Eat a black and white dessert (Oreo's?)
  • Play the "Chopsticks" game.  (A relay race carrying things like marshmallows/jelly beans back and forth using chopsticks.)
  • Have a Kung Fu Staring Contest...GO!

Kung Fu Panda Party Ideas, Part 2

*********************************************
The night before the birthday party,
I printed six copies of this:

Note:  A tangram is a Chinese puzzle made of five triangles,
a square, and a rhomboid...

Follow the white lines and cut the pieces apart.

There is a "key" showing the outline of all the characters from Kung Fu Panda (Po, Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Crane, Viper).  The goal is to use all seven pieces to create the image without overlapping any of the pieces.

Mantis (solved)

I will tell you that it took me about an hour to figure out all six.  (This kind of thinking is not my forte.)  Some of them are hard, so I took pictures of how I solved them (email me if you get stuck!).

I made an envelope for each character which I taped to a piece of paper with the character printed on it.
Here is Tigress (I was not fancy, notice the tape!)

When we got home from the movie, I gave birthday boy a piece of paper that said:

Mr. Ping says that it is time to use your noodle!  (get it?)
A tangram is a Chinese puzzle made of five triangles, a square, and a rhomboid.  Use all seven pieces of the tangram to create the furious five and Po.
Remember:  the pieces can’t overlap!
Everyone helped, but this still took a bit of time -- which was great!

Once all six of the puzzles were completed, I brought out Po with a special "Certificate of Awesomeness"...

(I was a little challenged with Po's feet, so I just ended up taping him to a piece of paper.  I tied a ribbon around the certificate as a "black belt".)

I believe I've mentioned how my kids like money for gifts.  I taped money inside the stand-up Po, and he was a very popular little Panda!

(Stay tuned:  I'll wrap up with Part 3.)
